The Present Day
Since the 1970s, the industry in Middlesbrough, Billlingham and Redcar has seen a decline, like similar industrial towns in the North of England. More and more companies began to source materials from Eastern countries where there is lesser cost due to unfair wages and low tax.
British Steel merged with a Dutch company in 1999 to form Corus. The result of the merger was bought out by Indian company Tata in 2007, who subsequently mothballed (closed down but kept for future use) the Redcar plant in 2010. Thailand firm SSI bought it the following year and recently announced more jobs and apprenticeships.
