The Transporter Bridge was built in 1911 by Cleveland Bridge Company, using steel from Dorman Long. It spans 259m, connecting Middlesbrough to Port Clarence across the River Tees. The gondola, or river car, can hold around 15-20 tons. It can travel across the Tees in around 90 seconds, which was incredibly fast at the time.
The transporter design was chosen so that ships could still travel out to sea from Teesport. This is still vital today as Teesport is a key part of Teesside's economy.
The bridge is currently being renovated and will reopen in the summer. New improvements include a state-of-the-art glass viewing lift, a modernised gondola, a refurbished walkway and new visitor centre.
